Case Study: How AI Game Development Interviews Helped Users Gain Confidence — and Spot Gaps in their CV

Breaking into the games industry is tough — especially when you’ve done all the right things: the degree, the courses, the portfolio. That was Matthew’s challenge.

A recent university graduate with a passion for 3D modelling and animation, Matthew had applied to several roles in game development but hadn’t landed a job. Like many first-time applicants, he struggled with interview confidence, and he wasn’t sure whether his CV truly reflected his skills.

That’s where Pxl-Persona’s AI avatars came in.

Creating a Personalised Interview Scenario

In late 2024, as part of our early testing phase, Matthew became one of the first users to trial Pxl-Persona’s AI interview simulation.

Working with our parent company Scenegraph Studios, we designed a custom interview scenario focused on entry-level roles in 3D game development — the exact type of job Matthew was going for.

Here’s what we set up:

  • A role-specific avatar interviewer based on real job descriptions we’ve seen in games industry hiring

  • A CV uploaded to the Pxl-Persona AI system, so the avatar could reference it and spot weaknesses and strengths

  • Our Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline to guide the avatar’s questions with precision and personality

Matthew’s first session was quiet. Understandably so.

“He was short with his answers,” recalls Dr David Tully at Scenegraph. “Not because he didn’t know what to say — just nerves. The typical first-time interview freeze.”

Progress Across Interviews: From Quiet to Confident

By his second AI interview, something had shifted. Matthew was more relaxed, more expressive. He spoke in longer sentences, started to enjoy the conversation, and leaned into the simulation.

By the third session, the change was pleasantly dramatic. He was confidently talking about:

  • Recent tools he’d picked up (like Z-Brush, Blender, Unreal Engine)

  • Projects he’d worked on at home

  • What he wanted from a team and workplace

The avatar guided the conversation, asked smart follow-ups, and let him speak — as a real interviewer would.

Spotting What’s Missing: CV Feedback from the AI

After every session, Pxl-Persona generated a feedback document that included:

  • Personalised suggestions for improvement

  • Up to three example “good” answers for comparison

  • Insights into missed opportunities or unclear communication

After the third session, the AI flagged something important:

The tools Matthew had spoken about — Z-Brush, Blender, Unreal — weren’t listed anywhere on his CV.

The avatar, thanks to the integrated CV and LLM setup, compared his spoken responses with his written application and spotted the disconnect.

Matthew updated his CV accordingly — and shortly after, he was invited to his first face-to-face interview.

Outcome: No Job… Yet

Matthew didn’t get that first job — but the team saw something much more important:

“He walked away from the interview confident,” said Dr Tully.“Not defeated, not unsure. Just ready for the next one.”

In fact, his mindset inspired the team to build new features:

  • Improved AI summary tools

  • Email follow-ups so users can export their session feedback

  • Expanded testing of different LLMs to improve accuracy and conversational flow

What Pxl-Persona is Building Next

We’re now developing secure user accounts that will:

  • Store CVs, job descriptions, and custom scenarios

  • Track performance over time

  • Add memory to avatars to build richer, more personal conversations

While single-session avatars are perfect for museum guides or retail assistants, interview training benefits enormously from longitudinal learning.

Because growth doesn’t happen in one go — it happens over time.

Final Thoughts

Matthew’s journey shows what Pxl-Persona is really about:

  • Helping people prepare, reflect, and improve — even if they’re not quite there yet.

  • Using AI not to take jobs, but to help people get them.

“I didn’t get the job, but I felt confident — and I know the next one’s coming.”— Matthew, aspiring 3D artist
