The museum experience is evolving.
From static labels and audio guides to interactive screens and mobile apps, venues have always looked for ways to bring stories to life. Now, with the emergence of AI-powered avatars, a new chapter is unfolding, one where visitors engage directly with lifelike digital guides that talk, respond, and even tell jokes.
At Pxl-Persona, we’re building this future by partnering with museums to create avatar-based guides tailored for younger audiences, SEND learners, and curious minds of all ages. Here's how it's changing the game.
The Challenge for Museums
Museums are full of knowledge, but it’s often hard to scale that knowledge for every visitor. Some common issues:
-
Limited staffing for guided tours
-
Difficulty maintaining consistent interpretation across exhibits
-
Visitors arriving out of hours or during peak times
-
Diverse audiences needing different levels of engagement or support
For SEND visitors, young children, or multilingual families, traditional interpretation methods may fall short. That’s where AI avatars can fill the gap.
The Pxl-Persona Approach
Pxl-Persona avatars are designed with two goals in mind: to educate and to engage. Our avatars use advanced AI to provide real-time, conversational guidance, backed by a curated knowledge base (RAG) developed in collaboration with museum staff.
We currently offer:
-
The Viking Avatar: set in a stylised fishing village, this guide shares Viking history with an immersive, cheerful tone.
-
**The Dinosaur Character: **a stylised boy in a dino helmet, perfect for engaging children with facts, puns and Jurassic humour.
-
**The Astronaut: **floating through space with planets orbiting in the background, this guide makes complex space facts accessible and fun.
These avatars are streamed via Pixel Streaming, meaning no app installs or high-spec hardware are needed. Visitors can interact with them via touchscreen kiosks, tablets, or even their own phones.
Designed for Education and Inclusion
Our museum avatars are designed to support:
-
SEND visitors, who benefit from calm, repeatable conversations without social pressure
-
ESOL learners, with avatars that can be trained to speak clearly and accessibly
-
Curator-led storytelling, preserving expert insight through RAG integration
-
Mobile learning, allowing avatars to travel with the user, at home, in class, or between exhibitions
We’ve seen that avatars not only increase engagement but also help younger visitors feel comfortable asking questions they may not raise with human guides.
Powered by Technology, Made with Curators
Each avatar is built using a combination of:
-
Unreal Engine for high-quality visuals and interactive scenes
-
Blender for custom styling and non-human characters
-
NVIDIA Audio2Face and our own plugins for real-time facial animation
-
RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) to personalise knowledge and keep conversations on-topic
We work closely with curators and educators to define what each avatar should know and how it should respond. It’s not a generic chatbot, it’s a digital extension of your museum’s voice.
What Visitors Are Saying
“The Viking avatar was clever and stayed in character even when I tested it off-topic. That level of personality makes learning way more engaging.”— Daniel, Creative Technologist
“I’ve never seen anything like this before. The characters had personality. The feedback helped me reflect on what I was learning.”— Jing, AI Software Developer
The Benefits for Museums
-
Extend the museum’s reach to mobile users and off-site learners
-
Reduce pressure on staff during peak periods or special events
-
Enable accessible, repeatable engagement for learners with different needs
-
Create memorable experiences that feel more like conversations than lectures
